CES 2019 has seen many many nice-looking laptops but Lenovo’s new Yoga S940 seems to be on another level. Lenovo will ditch their Yoga term for laptops that are 2-in-1, with the S940 being the first Yoga to be a standard clamshell laptop.
Lenovo has always been trying to trim the bezels but kind of failed as they usually leave a huge chin as seen on the Yoga 920 for example. This time, Lenovo has successful trimmed the bezels on all four sides, and like ASUS, the top has this reverse notch looking thing to fit the webcam. The webcam has pretty smart features. Other that Windows Hello, Lenovo included this eye-tracking Glance software which allows you to shift content from your laptop display to connected monitors with just a flick of your eyes. Also, when you step away from your Yoga S940, the display automatically darkens for privacy purposes.
The main attraction of the Yoga S940 is its display. You can choose between the 4K IPS panel with HDR400 support (500 nits) or the 1080p IPS panel with Dolby Vision (400 nits). An interesting aspect of the display is that it uses contoured glass which wraps around the display.
Let’s talk about design. The Yoga S940 rocks an awesome Iron Grey colour and has a smooth and premium aluminium finish. For me, this just looks so much more premium than the ASUS Zenbook S13 UX391. The laptop also looks like it is made from a single piece of metal like the MacBook Pro. Seriously, I have not seen a Windows laptop more stunning than this. The laptop is 1.2kg and 12.2mm thin.
As for internals, the Yoga S940 will be using the new Whiskey Lake 8th Gen Core i7 processor, up to 16GB of RAM and 1TB of PCle SSD storage. No discrete graphics on this device, but it comes loaded with an Intel UHD 620 Graphics.
Ports and connectivity wise, you got two USB-C Thunderbolt 3 ports, a single regular USB-C 3.1 Gen 1 port (mainly for charging), and a 3.5mm audio jack. Unfortunately in 2019, Lenovo still decides to put Bluetooth 4.0 on this device.
Battery life is estimated to be at 17 hours but only with the 1080p panel. Choosing the 4K panel will provide you with an estimated 7.5 hours only. Speakers on the Yoga S940 makes use of the Dolby Atmos Speaker system.
The Yoga S940 seems to compete directly with Dell’s XPS 13. The Yoga S940 starts at $1,499 (unsure if i5 or i7) while Dell’s XPS 13 starts at $1,209 for the i5 variant. But for me the Yoga S940 looks way better than the XPS 13 and also packs some smart webcam features, so I think Lenovo may have a winner with their S940. The Yoga S940 will be available in the summer of 2019 – so it is still a long wait.
