Review: Ugreen 65W GaN PD Fast Travel Charger Quick Charge (CD296)

It’s the end of the year and people are all travelling overseas, and one device that is great to take along is a mutli-port travel charger. The new Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger is a useful tool to charge all you and your partner’s devices as it comes with three ports. The Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger currently retails for S$54 on Shopee.

Powered by GaN

The internals of the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger uses GaN, short for Gallium nitride, which means that you can get a powerful charger in a smaller footprint. Main reason is because gallium nitride produces less heat, allowing manufacturers to put components can be closer together, thus reducing the overall size of the charger. GaN is not a new technology to Ugreen as they have successfully made other GaN chargers such as their 100W GaN Charger and Nexode 140W GaN Charger.

Design and build quality

The key benefit of the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger is apparent the moment you unbox it, which is its size. The Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger is really small for a 65W charger, measuring just 63mm * 63mm * 30mm, which is smaller than Apple’s own 67W charger which measures 74mm * 74mm * 28.6mm. However, when weight is compared, they are both about the same. Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger weighs about 210g (with the UK adaptor) compared to 205g of Apple’s 67W.

Like the Nexode 140W, the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger features a two-toned look, with space grey side plates of an overall matte black construction. There is your usual ‘Ugreen’ branding and the max power output labelled on the sides. The construction of Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger feels solid as the plastic used is of good quality.

Unboxing of Ugreen 65W GaN PD Fast Travel Charger Quick Charge

Ugreen really wants to market the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger as your go-to travel charger as it includes the EU, US, and UK plug along with a carrying pouch for ease of bringing it around. Simply put all of them in the pouch and bring them to all your travels and you need not worry about forgetting your travel adaptors.

I also like how easy it is to remove and switch out the different plug adaptors as there is button at the top to easily remove it, and it snaps on nicely with a click sound.

Ports selection

There are a total of three ports – 2x USB-C and 1x USB-A on the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger. Hvaing three ports is always good to have over one port like Apple’s 67W since you can charge more than one devices from a single power outlet. Do note that even though Ugreen labels it as a 65W charger, that is referring to its max power output. Depending on your charging permutation, the power output will differ.

For a quick summary of what power output you will get, you can refer to the below image.

If you want 65W power output, say for charging your laptop, always use the USB-C port as both offers 65W. The moment you’re using two or three ports, the maximum you will be getting is 45W.

Performance and safety

Using the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger, I am able to charge my 13-inch MacBook Air from 0% to full in slightly over an hour half. When charging multiple devices such as my MacBook Air and iPhone 11, the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger feels warm but does not get unsettlingly warm.

Ugreen are a trusted brand for making power adaptors for many years now, and they have included enhanced safety measures such as protection for overcurrent, overheating, over-voltage, and short-circuit.

Conclusion

At S$54, I think the Ugreen 65W GaN fast charger is at a great price for being a single power adaptor for all your charging needs especially when it comes to use when travelling. Its compact size, along with the international plug adaptors, and a carrying pouch really makes it fuss-free to chuck it in your bag, and be able to charge multiple devices wherever you go.
