Potato Head Beach Club Bali: Everything you need to know before going

Potato Head Beach Club is one of the many beach clubs in Bali. It’s pretty famous as well. If you’re planning to chill your day away at this beach club, this post will cover everything you need to know before going.

This post is written based on experience during June 2019.

Entrance fee

There is no entrance fee to enter the beach club. But if you main purpose is to chill there, you gotta have a day bed. And if you want a day bed there is a minimum spending.

Day beds

There are 2 main types of day beds – poolside day bed and beachfront cabana. The minimum spending to get yourself one of those are as follows:

  1. Pool side day bed: 1,000,000 IDR (~S$106) [no time limit]
  2. Beachfront cabana: 2,000,000 IDR (~S$212) [6-hour limit]

So which one should you choose? I will definitely recommend getting the pool side day bed as it has no time limit, is cheaper, and next to the pool. I chose pool side day bed so I’ll provide a little more information.

1. Pool side day bed

As the name suggests, it’s a day bed by the club’s pool. There are four rows of beds. The beds nearest to the pool are always the first to be reserved so if you want those pool side beds, you have to come early to secure one. Potato Head Beach Club opens at 10am. To be very safe, it’s best you get there by 9am to reserve any day bed you want. I got there at 9.35am, and the front row was already fully reserved.

You go to the main counter to reserve a day bed. The staff will show you a floorplan of the beach club (shown below).
The day beds left at 9.35am on a Monday

Two beds share a single sun umbrella. This means that you will not be fully covered from the sun. If you don’t want the sun beaming down on you all the time, choose the beds at the sides are there are trees to provide additional cover.

But if you want to get some tan, then get the beds in the middle. I had the middle bed in the second row and there was once the I had no shade from the sun for almost 2 hours.

Choose wisely.

The day bed can fit 4 people. But if you want comfort to lie about freely, then ideally it’s meant for two. Each bed comes with:

  • Towels x2
  • Pillows x4
  • Small bed table
  • Side table
Water on the small bed table is chargeable at 75,000 IDR

You are provided with a wooden chest next to your bed where you can keep your belongings and shoes. Bear in mind that there is no padlock attached to the chest box. So this means that if everyone on the bed decides to go to the pool or beach, yup your belongings are kinda left unattended. But everyone in the beach club seems pretty chill about it. I’ve seen many beds with phones and tablets lying around with no one around. But if you want to play safe you can always bring a padlock and lock your bag zippers.

Getting a pool side day bed means you get unrivalled access to the beach club’s infinity pool, which has a bar inside the pool.

2. Beachfront cabana

There are only about 11 of cabanas up for grabs. They seem to be meant for 2 people. On the cabanas, you have an unrestricted view of the beach. But if you want to use the pool, you’ll have to take a small flight of stairs up to the club.

Also, these cabanas are have a time limit of 6 hours so if you want to stay here the whole day on this, I suggest choosing the pool side day bed. It feels less “busy” at the cabanas, so if your plan is to chill away from whole beach club environment then maybe this one’s for you.

First-come-first-serve ‘chill beds’

Ok I’m not exactly sure what these are called, but you can’t really reserve them at the counter so it seems to be on a first-come-first-serve basis. If you fail to book the daybeds this is a pretty good alternative.

So, how does the ‘minimum spend’ work?

Based on the day bed that you book, you open a tab on with the minimum spend amount. You can use cash or credit card. From then on whatever food you order will be deducted from that tab. If you order more than the minimum amount, you’ll just have to pay the excess at the end when you leave.

Keep in mind that whatever you spend is subjected to 8% service charge and 10% government tax.

Food

The food and drinks menu can be found below:

When you arrive, the staff will ask if you want water. If you say yes, that bottle is chargeable at 75,000 IDR. Just a thing to note in case you’re keeping track of your expenses.

Here are some of the food we ordered:

Dragonfruit Smoothie Bowel (95k IDR)
Fried calamari (120k), Stark Beer-Battered Market Fish (175k), Stomach Settler (60k), and frozen fruits which are given out free occasionally
Sweet Potato Fries (65k)

Ambience & Service

There is music playing throughout. It is unobtrusive and creates a nice chill vibe.

The service in Potato Head Beach Club is impeccable. The staff are attentive and very friendly. My camera had low battery so I requested for a micro USB charging cable and they actually provided me with one!

The indoor areas are also very well designed so if you’re here for a quick bite and to soak in the atmosphere – it’s pretty nice.

Can I leave for a few hours and come back to my day bed?

You might be thinking: “since I bought the day bed for the whole day can I go somewhere else for coffee while retaining my day bed?” I would think the answer is “yes”. Let me explain.

Since you already placed a minimum spending on the tab and that the pool side day bed has no time limit, I believe you can leave and return later. It’s kinda like you’re going down to the beach then returning later. Just remember to take your important belongings and make the day bed look like you’re still coming back. But as always do play safe and perhaps let the staff know if you are leaving for a while.

Also, do try to stay at Potato Head Beach Club till sunset because it is really beautiful.

Things you should bring

Sunset at Potato Head Beach Club Bali

Other than the towels on the bed, there isn’t any spares provided to you. So I’d recommend bringing along a spare towel, some sunscreen lotion, sunglasses, portable charger (like this) and maybe iPad or a book to spend the time there. If you have a bottled water in your bag, it will be seized at the main entrance, but you do get to take it back when you leave.

TLDR things to know:

  • Arrive early at 9am onwards to reserve day bed (if you want one)
  • Pool side day beds are recommended (min spend of 1,000,000 IDR)
  • Bring extra towels
  • There isn’t a locker next to your bed but you do get a wooden chest
  • Bottled water will be confiscated, but you can collect them back later if you want
