Review: MOFT X Tablet Stand Invisible and Foldaway

The MOFT X tablet stand is a true gem. Let me explain. Most iPad cases on the market now comes with a front flap cover that usually does a trifold to allow your iPad to stand. They’re useful but when I’m holding up my iPad in either portrait or landscape mode, that front flap cover becomes annoying because I have to either hold it together against the back of the iPad or let it hang.

If that bugs you as well, then the MOFT X Tablet stand might be the best accessory for your iPad.

What is MOFT X

MOFT X is a foldable stand for your phone/tablet. In this review, I will be talking about the Tablet version of this product. As tablet comes in all sorts of sizes, the MOFT team has created two sizes for the MOFT X Tablet – (1) Tablet, and (2) Tablet Mini.

In this review, I will focus more on the regular size MOFT X tablet stand.

Tech specs

Tablet

  • Dimensions: 210mm * 150mm * 3.7mm
  • Weight: 130g
  • Compatibility: 9.7″ – 13″ tablets

Tablet Mini

  • Dimensions: 171mm * 116mm * 3.5mm
  • Weight: 87g
  • Compatibility: 7.9″ tablets (eg. iPad Mini)

Build quality

I like the materials that the MOFT team used – the polyurethane fabric and fiberglass feels nice to touch and adds a premium feel about it. No more cheap silicon or TPU rubber feel at the back of your tablet anymore!

Build quality on this stand is great. The foldings snap well with the magnets in place, and the position holds firm and stable.

Design

Space Grey color looks modern and minimal

The MOFT X Tablet stand comes in only one color, which is Space Grey. I like the color a lot, I think it will go really well with the space grey color of the 2018 iPad Pros. The overall look of the stand is very modern and minimal, and blends into the design of any tablet.

Watch the video demo below!

And also because it is only about 4mm thin, it doesn’t really bulge out at the back of your tablet and makes it feel like it is one unit together with your tablet. Besides, it is probably thinner than some cases out there.

3.5mm thin for the Tablet Mini, 3.7mm thin for the Tablet

The weight of the MOFT X Tablet size at 87g for Mini and 130g from the regular is actually lighter than my current cases! The brown iPad Mini cover weighs in at 100g while the black iPad pro cover comes in at 190g. Despite being thinner than traditional cases, they are still lighter – which is a great!

100g (left) and 190g (right) – heavier than the MOFT X Tablet

Features

Multi-angle positioning

I have always hoped for some company to create a kickstand case for the iPad (Logitech makes it but it makes your iPad super thick and it is also quite expensive), because it gives you many angles to position your tablet.

With traditional cases such as the Apple Smart Cover or the Moko Case Fit, you are only getting two fixed angles (estimated 70° and 15°) of placing your iPad.

And you can only position your iPad in landscape mode. But here’s what you get with the MOFT X Tablet stand:

30°/40°/60° in landscape mode

Three viewing angles to choose. The 60° angle is a great angle for watching videos or typing from a Bluetooth keyboard. The 30°/40° comes in handy when you’re putting your tablet on a low surface like a coffee table or even the floor.

Here’s how each of the angles look with the MOFT X Tablet stand in landscape mode:

40°/60°/25°* in portrait mode

That’s right, your iPad can now stand on its own in portrait mode. This is super useful if you are reading eBooks or PDFs. Again, you have multiple angles to choose from. Do note that the 25° angle requires you to position the iPad upside down (ie. if you’re not using the 2019 iPad Air, the home button will be at the top, but if you’re using a 2018 iPad Pro this shouldn’t be an issue).

Here’s how each of the angles look with the MOFT X Tablet stand in portrait mode:

Removable glue

This another big selling point. When pasting the tablet stand onto the tablet, it feels good to know that you can always remove it if your alignment is skewed. Despite using a removable glue, the stand still holds on to the tablet very strongly and securely. And when I removed the stand, it did not leave a single mark or scratch on my iPad.

Below you can see that I had removed the stand from a naked iPad Pro, to my iPad Pro with a clear TPU case on.

Say goodbye to annoying flaps

When holding to the tablet, you longer have to deal with the front cover flap hanging on its own or holding it down. Using an iPad Mini, holding the front flap is still okay as it is small. But on the iPad Pro, it can get quite cumbersome.

As the MOFT X Tablet stand is slim, I do not feel obstructed when holding the iPad with the stand flushed flat at the back.

User experience

I have been using the MOFT X Tablet stand on my 2017 iPad Pro daily for the past week. What I like about the MOFT X stand is the flexibility and the sleekness of the system. Let me explain.

‘Flexibility’

Being able to stand my iPad in both portrait and landscape mode such an awesome thing. Sometimes I use my iPad as a secondary monitor or a document reference while typing away on my main MacBook Pro. When I’m referencing to a PDF document, the ability to place my iPad Pro in portrait mode improves my workflow.

Moreover, you get three different type of angles to choose from. You can definitely find an angle pleases your eyes the best. The wide variety of setup to stand your tablet is a huge plus point to anyone using your tablet frequently.

‘Sleekness’

The overall package on my iPad looks super sleek and minimal. Want to hold your iPad up? No annoying front flap. Want to setup a stand for your iPad? The setup is a breeze.

Setting up a stand in either portrait or landscape is fast. No fiddling or folding or the front flaps. Just a lift and bend, and my iPad is ready to stand. Setting the 60° is super fast, but the 40° and 30° might take a little bit of experience for you to able to fold the stand blindly. But I’m pretty sure that after a couple times of experimenting with the folds, you’ll figure out the fastest way to set the MOFT X Tablet stand to the angle that you’d like.

Since we’re on this topic, maybe I’ll just share some quick tips:

Folding in Action

Take a look at the demo videos below on the 3 ways of folding the MOFT X Tablet stand.

Conclusion

But what about my front cover protection? For that question, I’ll offer two solutions:

  1. Apple Smart Cover (S$47 on Lazada)
  2. Neoprene material tablet sleeve 10 inch (S$2 on EZbuy)

I chose the latter, and this what I carry around with me everyday:

10-inch Neoprene tablet sleeve (S$2) with MOFT X Tablet stand pasted on clear TPU iPad Pro 2017 case

If you always wanted an iPad case that provides a form of stand but do not want to deal with a front cover flap, the MOFT X Tablet stand is perfect for you. But of course, the MOFT X Tablet stand offers way more than just that. Three choices of angling, ability to stand in portrait or landscape, slim and subtle package, removable glue…I could go on.

All of the above benefits for only S$40! Some cases cost even more that and don’t provide some of the benefits you’ll get on the MOFT X. After using it for a week, I think this is the best stand for my iPad Pro on the market right now.
