Review: VOLTME Revo 140W PD3.1 Multiport GaN Charger

You may not have heard of the company VOLTME, but their latest GaN charger in their Revo series have made them the honoree of the CES 2023 Innovation Awards. That product is the Revo 140W PD3.1 Multiport GaN Charger, which retails for $139 on Amazon.

Design and build quality

GaN is short for Gallium nitride, produces less heat so this allows manufacturers to put components can be closer together. This makes GaN chargers smaller to traditional chargers, which is also apparent in the VOLTME Revo 140W PD3.1 Multiport GaN Charger. VOLTME Revo 140W measures just 31.5mm * 73.5mm * 78.5mm (1.3 * 2.9 * 3.1 inch), making it rather palm sized, and VOLTME says it is 20% smaller than Apple’s own 140W charger. The charger weighs 270g.

VOLTME Revo 140W features a clean matte black finish with subtle square like imprints at the corners for modern look. The unit I have is the US plug version, and VOLTME don’t seem to make the charger for other regions given their foldable plug design that allows the two pins to fold in neatly. The overall construction feels very solid as well.

Ports selection

VOLTME Revo 140W has a total of 3 ports: 2 USB-C and 1 USB-A. This already makes it advantageous over Apple’s default 140W charger which only has one USB-C port. As with most 3-port chargers, the headline rate of 140W usually do not apply if you use all the ports. Do remember if you want to get 140W of power, you have to use the top most USB-C port, which VOLTME has nicely marked it with a laptop logo to remind you.

For a quick summary of what power output you will get, you can refer to the below image.

Do note that 140W fast charging of the MacBook Pro 16-inch is only supported by Apple’s own USB-C to MagSafe 3 cable. So if you really want that 140W power, you have to make sure you have that cable to begin with. Else, you will only get 100W with the standard USB-C charging.

Performance and safety

VOLTME Revo 140W can provide power to your devices in a short time. A quick 30 minutes can charge your iPhone 13 to 50%, and if you’re using the power hungry 16-inch MacBook Pro, you can get it to 100% under 2 hours. When charging, the VOLTME Revo 140W feels naturally warm but does not get uncomfortably hot which is good. VOLTME Revo 140W‘s V-Dynamic architecture provides safety features to prevent incidents like short-circuit, over-voltage and overheating.

Conclusion

At $139, the VOLTME Revo 140W is $40 more than Apple’s own 140W charger. But rightfully so as it is smaller, more feature-packed, and comes in a modern matte black design. If you do see yourself making use of more than one port and travel with you laptop charger, then I feel choosing the more expensive VOLTME Revo 140W charger makes sense. You can purchase the VOLTME Revo 140W on Amazon.
