Review: Omnidesk Titus Premium PU Leather Desk Mat

Omnidesk is known for their standing desks but they also sell desk accessories. The Titus is a PU leather desk mat that starts at S$39 depending on the size you choose.

Options available

Omnidesk sells the Titus desk mat in three different sizes (small, large, extra large) in two colour options (onyx, tan). The Titus desk mat I have is the Onyx colour option in medium size.

Unboxing

The Titus desk mat comes in a white box which contains:

  • Titus desk mat
  • Leather belt strap

Build quality and design

The Titus desk mat is made from PU leather which is easier to maintain that actual leather. I’m glad that the desk mat does not have any funky or chemical smell like some Taobao desk mats can have. There is an Omnidesk branding embossed on the bottom left of the mat. As the desk mat is rolled up in the box, it does take about 1-2 days for the desk mat to be fully flattened on your desk. One tip would be to place books on the edges of the mat when you’re sleeping to help with the flattening.

Omnidesk has also layered the Titus desk mat with waterproof coating. So, if you put your bubble tea on the desk mat, you don’t have to worry about the condensation damaging the desk mat at all. The Titus desk is quite thin too. Omnidesk listed on their website that the thickness is 3.5mm, but I measured and it seems to only be about 2mm thick. At 2mm, it lays almost like one piece with the desk.

Water? No problem

The Titus desk mat seems to be like two pieces of leather glued together instead of stitching. It could be design choice to have it finish with a one-piece look instead of having a stitch. As long as you don’t try to pry open the two layers, I believe the desk mat should hold up fine. Having said that, the edges of the mat are finished off really cleanly – no signs of frays or rough edges.

Usability

Other that making your desk a little more aesthetically pleasing, a desk mat also helps to provide a flat and soft surface to work on comfortably. It can help to protect your table as well. Also, I find that using a desk mat helps with organisation and reduce cluttering of the desk as I tend to put my working essentials on the mat.

I find the ‘Large’ size of the Titus mat is feels more like a longer version of the ‘Small’ if you refer to the table above. The deviates from the 2.5 times ratio proportions and instead has a 3.2 ratio. I would have preferred if the ‘Large’ has more depth, but then again it is personal preference. With the large size, there is enough length for me to use the mat as my mouse pad and keep my phone and note book on it as well.

The Titus desk mat is quite comfortable to work on. The surface is soft and does not trap heat easily. My palms and wrists can feel the increased comfort in using a desk mat versus previously resting on my desk itself. And as the mat is quite thin, the edges do not feel obtrusive or uncomfortable on my forearms.

However, one unfortunate thing about the Titus desk mat is that it does not have an anti-slip/skid base. This may be a small issue because soon as you start putting things on the desk mat like a keyboard or notebook, the mat will stay in place on the table. As my Keychron K8 packs quite a bit of weight, the desk mat remains where it is. You can always buy anti-skid stickers and stick it on the back of the desk if you want to. But it would have been nice to see anti-slip base as a default feature.

Conclusion

The Titus desk mat is well-made and improves comfort on my palms and wrist while working. The PU leather is also water resistant and feels great to touch. If you’re looking for a desk mat and the any of the sizes above fits the bill, you can consider purchasing the Titus desk mat. You may be surprised at the difference a desk mat can make.
